Downtown Lukut

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Downtown Lukut with busy traffic on Jalan Seremban–Port Dickson (Federal Routes 5 and 53, overlapped). A town rooted in tin mining, it was formerly a territory of the Selangor Sultanate during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim Shah (1782–1826), Muhammad Shah (1826–1857) and Sultan Abdul Samad (1857–1898), respectively the second, third and fourth Sultans of Selangor.

Lukut was founded by Raja Busu, the grandson of the first Sultan of Selangor, Raja Lumu (later Sultan Salehuddin) in 1815, and experienced its heyday as a prominent tin mining outpost under Raja Jumaat, a Riau nobleman and a relative of Sultan Muhammad Shah. Under his son Raja Bot, the significance of Lukut gradually declined following the opening of more productive mines in other parts of Selangor and constant unrest.

Lukut was annexed by the Luak of Sungei Ujong following the Selangor–Sungai Ujong Treaty (1878) signed by Sultan Abdul Samad and Dato' Klana Syed Abdul Rahman (Undang of Sungai Ujong), and is now administered as part of Port Dickson District in Negeri Sembilan. In return, Sungai Ujong has to cede parts of its northern territories to Selangor, which is now administered as part of Hulu Langat District.

Raja Busu was laid to rest in Kuala Lukut, Raja Jumaat in the Selangor Royal Mausoleum in downtown Lukut, and Raja Bot in the Mahmoodiah Royal Mausoleum in Johor Bahru.
