Information on temporary account IP viewer rights
[edit]Hello JWilz12345,
On November 12, temporary accounts will be enabled on Commons. The IP of unregistered users will then be hidden for most users. You, as a patroller or license reviewer, are eligible to request the new temporary account IP viewer right, if you need it to continue fighting vandalism and abuse on Commons. If you want to request the right, please file the request here. Please be aware that you also have to accept the Wikimedia Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy in your preferences. For more information about temporary accounts, look at the project page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:34, 7 November 2025 (UTC)
File:G. Fernando Avenue (Marcos Highway, Marikina; 2017-03-10).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

US architecture
[edit]Hi, that template says though: This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer. This isn't the case in this instance... Friniate (talk) 11:51, 1 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Friniate umm, but that is not an American building. It's an Italian building. {{PD-old-architecture}} is designed to prevent non-US buildings from being categorized under Category:PD US architecture, which is supposed to only contain pre-1991 American buildings. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contributions) 11:54, 1 December 2025 (UTC)
- I understand that, but Template:PD-ItalyGov says that it must be accompanied by a valid US copyright tag, and PD-US-architecture is the only PD tag that can be used in those files, any other tag would likely lead those images to be deleted again... I wasn't aware of the issue with the categorization, but I think that it should be fixed by adding a parameter for non-US buildings, not by removing the copyright tag... Friniate (talk) 11:59, 1 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Friniate or, to simplify things, and since photographs of any building are technically not infringements in the United States, images of public domain buildings from countries with no Freedom of Panorama are best left without any US license tag, and the accompanying PD license tag of the source country is to be used. Overzealous tags complicate things and may be confusing for reusers of WikiCommons media. This matter is best forwarded to an appropriate forum, however.
- I think the notice "it must be accompanied by a valid US copyright tag" was meant for the US copyright status of non-architectural works. I assume the {{PD-ItalyGov}} tag was originally created for photographs and artworks (e.g., paintings and drawings), and the original creators of the template did not think of Italian buildings. US copyright statuses for artworks and old photos are more complicated due to URAA, PD-US-no notice, and many other factors.
- However, US copyright status on buildings has been consistent even after amendments to the US Copyright Act, courtesy of simplified terms under AWCPA law of the US: any building constructed before December 1, 1990, is in the public domain, and any building constructed after that is copyrighted but can be freely exploited courtesy of US FoP. Whether copyrighted or not, there are full rights to reproduce buildings through photography under US law, with no conditions. Architects (or their descendants) have little (or perhaps no) rights to control public exhibitions of photographs of their works under US law. Therefore, I think it's unnecessary to consider US copyright status for public domain buildings in countries without Freedom of Panorama. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contributions) 12:14, 1 December 2025 (UTC)

- Per my experience with Philippine structures (see Category:PD-Philippines FoP work, purposely created to separate the images from categories meant for old photos, old paintings et cetera), US copyright status is left ignored for images of public domain buildings, since Filipino reusers will only get confused. Plus, US law provides exploitation rights for the general public with no conditions (and no strong moral rights under US federal law), so technically it's 100% legally safe to host public domain Philippine buildings on WikiCommons without applying US copyright tags.
- Example: File:01258jfIntramuros Manila Landmarks Wedding Cars Buildingsfvf 06.jpg. Simplified tags: uploader/photo license tag and Philippine-specific tag for the building. No need to add US tags. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contributions) 12:33, 1 December 2025 (UTC)
- @JWilz12345 I don't know what to say, that template was written by administrators, and as we explored the possibility to use also photos of post-1976 buildings in Italy I was told that a US copyright tag was needed. If you want to raise the subject in the village pump and suggest to modify the template I've no objections, but until then I'll continue to add a valid US copyright tag to be on the safe side and avoid that some random user will open DRs for those images...
