2023 Picture of the Year: Incense plays an important role in Vietnamese life. It is considered as a sacred bridge to connect the visible life of human beings and the world of heaven, earth, and gods. Photo taken in Quang Phu Cau village, on the outskirts of Hanoi, Vietnam. In this picture, incense sticks are being set out to dry, after being dipped in the incense solution.

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2024 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the nineteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2024) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. Mistaken deletion: File:Gabe Burkle.jpg

Hi there,

I encouraged one of my colleagues to upload photos he takes covering sports for me on Wikipedia. He's new, but he told me that a photo was deleted for being "tv interview screenshot". We are actually covering these sports and providing high quality images (him better than me, I'm a writer, he's a photographer) to help the project. Looks like you're the person who deleted it. It would be nice if there was some grace provided to allow us to explain that these are real photos provided those who want to help the project, rather than an assumption that might have been mitigated through a quick explanation and proof of his coverage for me. Here was his full album for me.

Did he not assert this? He replied to the person who tagged him on his page, but it was deleted a mere 10 minutes after his tag. Why did you not give him an opportunity to respond? I'm trying to understand the human aspect of this. I know we'll get the photo back, but I'm trying to understand why humans are treated this way.

I realize this is moot, but I just wanted to convey the negative effect it has on new people helping this project and following the rules. -- Bobak (talk) 01:17, 26 October 2025 (UTC)

@Bobak; I read your answer, the discussion is closed by @Yann. I will provide my arguments here.

Firstly, I saw the album's link, but there is no indication on the page about CC licences. Therefore, VRT is needed.

You are claiming that @Geoffroi and I are working against the spirit of the process to cover up flagrant errors and crushing new users. This is unacceptable and seems like a personal attack. I am assuming good faith, and I know your intentions are not bad. Please do not continue with these kinds of sentences. I accepted your request and waiting for the VRT process. As an involved admin, I do not evaluate the VRT request, another VRT agent will examine it.
